The Lexus CT200h is a new vehicle for Lexus in 2011. It is the least expensive model in the Lexus line up. Itwas made to compete with the BMW I series, the Audi A3 TDI and the VW Golf GTI TDI . The CT200hcompetes well in its class. It's built on the Prius platform but the comparisons stop there. The CT200h is amuch nicer and sportier car than the Prius. It also has much better styling. The CT200h is a very fun car todrive that gets a nice 40+ mpg.
Like I said earlier the CT200h is built on the Prius platform, but is being sold as a 5 door. In reality it is a 4-door hatch back. This means it has all the same running gear as the Prius. It also shares the same in cabcontrols as the Prius, yet it is obviously not a Prius. The interior is much more refined than the Prius and it is also less noisy. Noise in hybrids is something that every OEM struggles with. Some do a very good job, while others do not. Lexus did a great job on the interior noise of the CT200h. You can tell that it is a Lexus from the minute you climb into the drivers seat. The leather seating is very comfortable and the controls are all an easy reach. My only complaint is that I wish it had a few more storage compartments.
The performance on the CT200h is great, switch to sport mode and you are off. It is so fun to drive in this mode  that you almost hate to switch back. The problem is you will not see the high mpg in this mode so use it only when you want to have fun! The ride of the CT200h is not as soft as the other Lexus models. The CT200h feels more stiff and even intensifies its stiffness in the Sport mode. The stiffness comes from the CT200h being the first Lexus to offer a lateral performance damper system. It is meant to reduce body vibrations while promoting a more comfortable ride. If you are expecting a plush ride you will need to look elsewhere, the CT200h is not your car. But if you are looking for a great sporty hybrid that gets 40+ mpg then this is your car.
Speaking of Hybrid, you can also use the "Eco" mode on the CT200h to maximize your mpg. The problem with this mode is you can't get enough speed fast enough to be able to use it in traffic. You can use it in a parking garage or if you live in a community where the speed limit is very low. You can also travel up to one mile with a full battery charge as long as you don't exceed 28 mph. I did not find myself using this mode much. It's sort of fun to see how far you can go without engaging the engine but the folks behind you won't have that much patience for that, so inevitably you will find yourself mashing the pedal to avoid being runover.
The CT200h is a very fun car to drive that is also versatile. It's a great car for a 2-3 person family, but it would be a bit tight for families larger than that. You can squeeze four large adults into it but you will feel cramped. It is a great 2 person car. The back seats fold down to give more storage room and we were able to get our weekly "Costco shopping" into it. Test drive the CT200h today and tell them John Rush from Drive Radio sent you!
